The company Hero Honda was a creation of a joint venture between the Indian based Hero Group and Honda Motor Company. The Hero group is the flagship company of the Munjal family. The Honda Motor Company is a Japanese auto giant.
The amalgamation, which created history in the two-wheeler space, was set up in 19th January 1984. It was a listed entity in the stock markets and both these players owned 26% each in the venture. However, in 2010 the deal ended with the Munjal family buying out the 26% stake of Honda Motor Company. Therefore, as Honda left Indian shores the company changed its name from Hero Honda to “Hero Motor Corporation”.
Though it was founded in Gurgaon, it is headquartered in New Delhi. They have manufacturing facilities in Dharuhera in Gurgaon and Haridwar in Uttarakhand The product range includes motor cycles, scooters, three wheelers and spare parts. The key people are Brij Lal Munjal the Chairman and Pawan Munjal who is the Managing director and the CEO. Under the able guidance of these people, the company has grown from strength to strength. The parent company was Hero cycles. It was during the 1980s when India was slowly emerging from the aftermath of partition the need for bikes was felt.
The promoters were quick to realize the existence of a major two-wheeler market in an economy such as India. Hence, they launched the company. However, those were the olden days. Along with the passage of time, the company has in its inventory some of the well designed and sleekly two wheelers one will come across.
